Master documentarian Lauren Greenfield takes a deep, unfiltered look at the impact of social media on today’s youth in ‘Social Studies’. A character-driven documentary, the series delves into the lives of the first generation raised on social media.
Carbon teamed up with Lauren and Institute Pictures to create the animations featured throughout the show’s opening titles. “Lauren had the idea to introduce each teenager with an animated avatar on a digital map,” explains Carbon Creative Director Rob Foster. “It’s on point for the topic of the show and the subjects live all over Los Angeles, so it was the perfect way to introduce them.”
Title Sequence Design
Our team wanted to bring something extra to the brief and created custom designed isometric maps for each high schooler. Something to elude to the social platforms they all use, but also a design that would stand on its own. “Using isometric maps let us add depth, dimension, and details while sticking to a motion design workflow. Every kid was given a bespoke design and every building, prop, and landmark was custom drawn. Our Lead Designer, Matt Beharry, is a total expert in the style now!” ends Rob.

Early Design Development & Motion Tests
We also worked together on some of the early design development, collaborating on ideas for how translate and integrate various phone screens and social media UI’s into the show’s live action footage.
